25.

Blue slid a sheet of glittering embossed letterhead from the envelope and read a statement similar to the one Brady read months ago.

“We are pleased to announce your nomination for the JUNO Award for Song of the Year.”

Brady rocked back in his chair and grinned. “Let me guess. Scoob?”

He nodded. “He didn’t know about the other nomination at the time. It’s a coincidence that he and Barry submitted the same song. That or they’ve been plotting behind my back.”

“If this is the kind of thing they come up with, I say let them plot.”

“We can use the Grammys as a test run. If it goes well, I can go to the JUNOs.”

“You don’t sound happy about it,” Brady said.

“I’ll be happy after L.A.”

“You wrote the songs, cub. You deserve the recognition regardless of what other people contributed,” Brady repeated the statement he’d told him several times over the past few weeks.

It didn’t make him feel any less like a fraud. Scoob had loaned him the guitars and taught him to play. The group of regulars at Scoob’s house taught him the difference between a song and a hit. Countless hours in the studio with them taught him to write songs that said as much with the music as the lyrics. Scoob helped produce every demo he submitted. Yet, they were silent partners, their names absent from the award as if he’d done it on his own.

He felt like a poser about to spend an evening mingling with a group of people who had real talent, pretending he was on the same level. Apprehension gripped his stomach in its fist. He set the paper and the envelope back on the desk and curled up on the couch glad he hadn’t eaten the rest of the chips.

“Is it worth the anxiety?” Brady asked.

“Being an outsider in a room of people who have been doing this for decades? Yes. They’ll think I snuck in with the caterers. I’m nobody to them.”

“I doubt that. I’m sure you got their attention when the first song went platinum. If anything, they’re wondering why they haven’t met you before. I expect that weekend to be a string of lunches and dinners with people who want to check out the new guy burning up the charts.”

“You’re a biased opinion.”

“That has nothing to do with it. Trust me. Once people put a face to the name, you’ll spend the rest of the night shaking hands and trading business cards. You know what I mean.” Brady waved away the fact that he didn’t have any business cards.

“And where will you be during all this?”

“I’ll be the suave silent guy at your side who could be a bodyguard, relative, or boyfriend. No one will be sure which.”

He stared at Brady’s warm smile and its unwavering reassurance and asked the question gaining volume in his head day by day.

“What are the odds that bastard from the camp settled in Los Angeles?”

The smile drifted away. “Zero,” Brady said without hesitation.

“He could be anywhere.”

“Not there.
